With the support of carefully selected members of the District of Columbia National Guard, the Youth Leaders' camp guides students through a 14-day pre-established schedule of fun and enriching daily activities and classes, while ensuring that all students have a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment in which to learn.

Supervision
Supervision at the camp is provided by carefully selected members of the District of Columbia National Guard, many of whom have civilian experience in the supervision of youth programs as counselors, athletic directors, and coaches.

Classroom Instruction
The National Guard Bureau’s GEAR Program is used to introduce students to necessary life skills and survival tools, designed to assist them now and as they become adults and valued members of our community. The central theme for these presentations is that:

    YOU CAN control your life.
YOU CAN have a successful future.
  YOU CAN accomplish great things.

Sports and Entertainment
The Youth Leaders' Camp constantly helps young, energetic students channel their engergies into sports rather than destructive activities. Campers are involved in sports such as basketball, swimming, volleyball, hiking, and tug-of-war. There is also free time for leisure activities such as reading and movies.

Graduation & Awards
The camp concludes with a graduation ceremony. Students successfully completing the camp are presented a graduation certificate and are charged with a responsibility to share with other young people what they have learned by setting the example.

The Youth Leaders' Camp is not a recruiting program for the National Guard.

"Since [my daughter] first participated in the Youth leaders' Camp, I have observed and witnessed the development of those individuals qualities which distinguish leaders from followers"
